NEW YORK – An all-star revue of original psychedelic rock ’n’ roll posters – more than 100 items from the 1960s up to the turn of the century – will be sold in an online auction on Saturday, Oct. 28, by Jasper52. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The auction will launch on a timely note with a poster promoting the 1994 Rolling Stones appearance at Oak Stadium, a series of four Halloween Shows presented by Bill Graham. The 18 ½-by-28-inch lithograph (above) depicts the Stones – Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger and Kieth Richards – in Halloween costumes while trick or treating. Created by artists Harry Rossit and Peter Barsotti, the colorful and comical poster is valued at $100-$200.

Two of rock ’n’ roll’s seminal events are celebrated: Tom Wilkes’ 1967 Monterey Pop Festival poster and Arnold Skolnik’s 1969 Woodstock poster. The Monterey Pop Festival, held June 16-18, was one of the high-water marks in the music scene for the year 1967. It is estimated that between 55,000 and 90,000 people attended. The music festival hosted the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix and the Who, and one of the first major public performances by an up-and-coming singer named Janis Joplin. It is generally regarded as one of the beginnings of the “Summer of Love” in 1967. Posters for the festival were produced in two sizes. The large-size posters were used for advertising and were posted around the area. The smaller ones were intended to be sold as souvenirs at the festival. Both types were printed on a foil paper and are scarce today, especially in high grade. The smaller poster offered in the Jasper52 has a $750-$1,500 estimate.

The Woodstock festival was one of the most pivotal events of the 1960s. The iconic Woodstock poster offered in the Jasper52 auction is guaranteed to be genuine and has been signed by the artist who created it, Arnold Skolnik. Woodstock posters come in two sizes: 18-by-24 inches and 24 by 36 inches; the larger size is offered in the auction.

Another rare poster in the auction is the FD-60 Janis Joplin poster by artist Rick Griffin and published by Family Dog Productions. Topped by the headline “Motherload,” the litho pictures Joplin surrounded by her Big Brother & the Holding Co. bandmates. This is the first 1967 printing; not the common second print.

Fans of the Doors and their frontman Jim Morrison will be interested in their poster from the 1968 Northern California Folk-Rock Festival at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, where the band headlined with Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & the Holding Co. and the Animals. Carson-Morris Studios created the poster, which pictures a photo of Morrison.

Only 1,000 posters were created for Nirvana’s performance at the Palaghiaccio di Marino in Rome on Feb. 22, 1994, which was one of the last shows on the group’s final tour, weeks before Kurt Cobain’s death. The lithograph in the auction is numbered 646/1000, has a red stamp in the lower right corner, is and signed by the artist Alesandro Locchi.
