MANHEIM, Pa. – Over 20 decorated dower chests from Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties will be offered along with other furniture and Americana in Conestoga Auction Co.’s sale on Saturday, Oct. 28. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Topping the list is an extremely fine Dauphin or Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, paint-decorated dower chest having a central panel inscribed, “CADRINA/HEMPERLY/1832.” Its lid has two oval panels with stamped floret designs. The front has arched panels with compass star, tulip and stamped floret decoration and diamond border. The interior contains a till with a secret compartment. The chest is in very good condition with minor wear. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.
The sale also contains a dozen antique woven coverlets. A two-piece jacquard coverlet signed “Peter Harting, 1833” is from Lancaster County. The design features a floral field with an eagle and tree border. It is expected to sell for $200-$400.

A blue spatter ironstone pitcher and wash bowl in the Cluster of Buds pattern should attract attention. The pitcher, which is in good condition, is 11¾ inches high. The wash bowl, which is 14 inches in diameter, has several chips.

Also featured are a Pennsylvania inlaid tall chest, a Pennsylvania walnut shrank, a Chippendale tall case clock (below), 18th-century side chairs, homespun linens, a collection of Stiegel Glass, metal hearth ware and a selection of Pennsylvania cast-iron stoves.
