MARSEILLE, France – Since the 18th century the East has seduced Westerners with its idyllic settings, inviting artists to stay. Leclere auction house now invites collectors to partake in its next Orientalist and Islamic Art auction on Friday, October 27. The auction catalog consists of 86 lots of paintings, prints, sculpture and other fine works of art. Absentee and Internet bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
An outstanding example of Orientalist painting in the sale is Constantinople, Hagia Sophia from the Bosphorus by François-Léon Prieur-Bardin (French, 1870-1939). The large oil on canvas (above) is expected to sell for upward of €125,000 ($147,330).
More accessible is Paul Jouve’s Arab horseman, an ink, gouache, watercolor and graphite work on paper, completed circa 1910. The dramatic image has a €2,000-€3,000 estimate.

Also remarkable is a bronze bust titled Said Abdallah, from the tribe of Mayac, kingdom of Darfur by Charles Cordier (French-Algerian, 1827-1905). The 16-inch tall bronze, circa 1848-1852, is accented with oxidized silver, gold and red patina. It is signed “CH. CORDIER” on the man’s cape.
